THE PURSUIT IS HAPPINESS
THE PURSUIT IS HAPPINESS
The first use of the term coaching to describe a trainer or instructor was around 1830 at Oxford University. The first use of the term in relation to sports came over 30 years later in 1861. Today, when most people hear the word coach, they typically associate a coach with professional athletes, although the term has been used globally for all areas in the professional world for decades. The word Coach originated from the Hungarian word kochi meaning “carriage” or “medium of transport.” Therefore, coaching has been used in modern language to describe the process used to transport people from where they are to where they want to be. Think of a coach as your modern-day Uber driver. Do you know what the difference is between a counselor, a bartender, and an Uber driver? They are all similar in that they are all needed, trusted, respected, and know everyone’s deepest darkest secrets. The only difference is the Uber driver takes you to where you want to be. All coaching is taking an individual to places they can‘t take themselves. It is a specific process of training or development in which a person called a “coach” supports a learner in achieving a specific personal or professional goal. In literature, we find many definitions and examples of coaching. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” Gary Collins, author of Christian Coaching: Helping Others Turn Potential into Reality, defines coaching as “the art and practice of working with a person or group in the process of moving from where they are to where God wants them to be.” This process clarifies their dreams, quantifies their goals, identifies their potential, sharpens their skills, and helps them take definitive steps to their desired destinations. Here at Epic Pursuits, we describe Life Coaching as a comprehensive process that helps individuals identify, overcome, and navigate the challenges of life. Whether those challenges are in a career, finances, health, relationships, spirituality, education, and/or recreation, it is all LIFE and we stand here to provide guidance and solutions for these challenges.
We are living in an Information Age. These days anything anyone could ever need to learn, do, want, and be is available to them through their mobile device. Every year companies, schools, and everyday people spend billions of dollars on books, training, and education in pursuit of progressive growth and development. But the unspoken truth is that most books are never read, programs are left half done if started at all, information is not retained, and what is learned is never applied. Richard Paul Evans famously quoted, “What a culture we live in, we are swimming in an ocean of information, and drowning in ignorance.” We live in a vast ocean of unfulfilled potential, un-tried goals, and forgotten dreams. The unlimited web of knowledge and misinformation we have access to has people lost and confused. But information isn’t the main problem. The reason people struggle with following through with their plans and pursuing their goals and dreams isn’t due to a lack of resources. Resources and information are abundant. It isn’t that people don’t have a want, need, or desire. We all seek passion, peace, purpose, and prosperity in our daily lives. Most of all, it isn’t because people don’t have time. According to an article by explodingtopics.com, the average American spends 7 hours and 4 minutes per day on their screen. So people have time, they just haven’t been inspired to invest it properly. Everyone has personal and professional goals and dreams. But they also have limiting beliefs, doubts, fears, distractions, and insecurities. They seek high and low, swiping left and right to find the solution on a screen, but the screen cannot replace the power of in-person coaching and guidance. They don’t need more YouTube influencers, life-hacks, 5-10 step miracle blogs, sleep hypnosis programs, or another get-rich-quick scheme. They need a Life Coach. The truth is that we all need someone to encourage us and hold us accountable. Someone to challenge our beliefs and help us ask the bigger questions. We all need someone to walk with us when life happens when responsibilities get overwhelming when we are discouraged and limit our own beliefs. In an ever-changing and evolving world, it is easy to get stuck. Change is hard. Having a Life Coach can help bridge the gap between old ideals and a wholistic, happy, and healthy life. A Life Coach can be a lightning rod that keeps you grounded when you are challenged, frustrated, discouraged, and distracted. A Life Coach can be a lighthouse when you are lost in a sea of information and need to find your way. A Life Coach can help you dream bigger and stretch your horizons to create a compelling vision for your life, and also help chart the course to get you there. Sometimes they‘ll even adjust the sails for you. Content won’t hold you accountable, a coach will. Content won’t give you support when the critics, nay-sayers, and haters don’t believe in you and your vision. A Coach will support you, believe in you, and encourage you to completion.
To understand investing, we must first understand the currency. What is today’s most valued form of currency? Money and Time. Money is what we pay, or get paid with for our products or services and Time is what we pay for, or get paid for based on our work or services provided to us. When we earn money, we get to use it however we choose. We can spend it, save it, invest it, donate it, and even throw it away. Money can be earned and it can be lost. Money is the most tangible form of currency and is a great tool for creating the options and choices in life we all so desire. When we apply for a job, there is a dollar amount attached to it based on our experience and the amount of time attached to the position. The employer isn’t paying you for what you are worth, they are paying you for what you’re time is worth. When you pay for a service or charge a customer for a service, you are not paying them for the service itself, you are paying them for their time and the experience they have invested into that time. Time and experience are very important and highly valued commodities. Time is a currency that yields the highest interests if applied properly. Time is just like money, only once it is lost it is gone for good. You can never regain a second lost. This is why Time is of higher value to successful and wealthy people all over the world. Someone once said, that Michael Jordan’s time is worth so much, that if he were to drop a $100 bill on the ground, it would cost him more money to stop and pick it up than it would to just leave it on the ground. Time is the currency. How you are spending it makes all the difference. Every day people squander their inheritance of time not knowing that they are investing it into the success of other people and companies, instead of investing it into their future. In the Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma Andrew Lewis explains, “If you are not paying for the product you are the product.” Every day we vote for the next success story with our time and money. Now that we understand the currency of Time and Money, what is the number one investment you can make for your future? Is it real estate investing? Day trading? Stocks and bonds? 401ks? Roth IRAs? Gold? Land? Cryptocurrency? These may be excellent investments. But we believe the indisputable number one investment is you. When the economy is down and the value of these ideals and investments are low, you are the only one that can create better circumstances for your life. The more time and money you invest into your personal development, the more valuable of an asset you become to yourself, your family, and to your career. People who invest in themselves and their personal development, create their own economy. They are resilient and gritty. When the economy is down, they stay up. If they lose their jobs or businesses, they will find new ones. If they can‘t find one, they create one. If the market crashes and they lose their homes, they bounce back and buy a new one. If their investments fail and they suffer heavy losses, they pivot and recreate new investments. They are never long-term victims of circumstances. Here at Epic Pursuits, we believe in Coaching and Personal Development. This is why we are always Coaching and developing ourselves to be better for our clients. Our focus is on helping our clients find their resolve in life, so they can become the greatest asset to their values.
